How you can help
There are a few ways you can help support the project. Have a read below and if you're interested, reach out to me.
Join the beta
While the API is still in its early stages, feedback from developers using it in the real world would be incredibly helpful. This can help shape the course of the API, and get the most useful features developed sooner.
Right now, there's no formal beta program — but if you do integrate the API into a project or just try it out, I'd love to hear about your experience and any feedback you have.
Let me know if there's an area you want supported
If you've found an area you're interested in isn't covered by the API, let me know. Coverage will be added in time and is dependent on what public information is available, but I'll happily prioritise adding an area if there's particular interest in it.
Let me know if water restrictions change in your area
Accessibility to publicly available water restriction information can vary between regions. You can help keep the API current by letting me know when things change in your area.
Although some sources are monitored, there are a few challenges that make complete coverage difficult:
- Website updates often happen the same day restrictions change — meaning there's little to no advance warning.
- Social media is a common place for announcements in advance of changes — but harder to monitor automatically and reliably
- Offline sources like local newspapers or community noticeboards are nearly impossible to track programmatically
If you spot something new, a quick heads-up is always appreciated.
What to report
📣 If you see a new water restriction announcement — whether online or offline — please send it my way.
Things that are helpful:
- Any areas affected (eg. Auckland, South Wairarapa)
- Context about the change (eg. the restriction level or stage is going from level 1 -> level 2
- A link, screenshot or photo of the source
- The date it was announced or comes into effect
